This project tackled the challenge of enhancing GP appointment accessibility within Northern Ireland's healthcare system by developing an intuitive online platform inspired by the existing Health and Social Care infrastructure. Through comprehensive research and user-centric design, the platform enables seamless appointment booking, access to health records, and prescription management. Despite being an individual endeavour, the project encompassed various roles, from user research to software development, highlighting adaptability and flexibility. While certain constraints existed, including time limitations and resource availability, the project prioritised delivering a user-friendly solution aligned with diverse user needs. Reflecting on the journey, I'm pleased with the work produced and the final outcome.
In addressing a pressing issue within Northern Ireland's healthcare system, I embarked on a project focusing on enhancing the accessibility and efficiency of GP appointments. Identifying the cumbersome process of booking appointments as a prominent pain point, I devised a solution centred around the development of an intuitive online platform. Drawing inspiration from the existing Health and Social Care (HSC) infrastructure, I crafted a user-friendly webpage that revolutionises patient-doctor interactions. This digital interface empowers patients with the ability to seamlessly schedule GP appointments at their convenience, access comprehensive health information, review past visits, and conveniently order repeat prescriptions. By streamlining these essential services into a single accessible platform, my project aimed to alleviate the burdensome challenges faced by both patients and healthcare providers, ultimately fostering a more responsive and patient-centric healthcare system in Northern Ireland.
The current healthcare system in Northern Ireland faces a significant challenge regarding the accessibility and efficiency of GP appointments, which directly impacts patient care and satisfaction. Patients encounter difficulties in securing timely appointments due to cumbersome booking processes and limited access to essential health information. This problem hampers effective healthcare delivery and exacerbates patient dissatisfaction. Consequently, there is an urgent need to address these shortcomings by implementing a solution that streamlines the appointment booking process, enhances access to health information, and improves overall patient experience within the Northern Ireland healthcare system.
The target audience for this project, encompassing individuals of varying ages, backgrounds, and technological proficiencies within Northern Ireland, exhibits a diverse range of needs and preferences. From tech-savvy teenagers like Sarah, seeking convenience and autonomy, to busy professionals like David, prioritising efficiency and reliability, catering to this diverse user base requires a flexible approach that accommodates different levels of digital literacy, accessibility requirements, and personal preferences. As such, the project must be designed with adaptability and inclusivity in mind, ensuring that the platform addresses the unique needs of each user while providing a seamless and satisfying experience for all.

For the successful execution of this project, various roles were essential, ranging from user research and interface design to software development and testing. Despite the project being an individual endeavour, I assumed all necessary roles to ensure its comprehensive development and implementation. As the sole participant, I conducted extensive user research to understand the diverse needs of the target audience, conceptualised and designed the user interface to prioritise usability and accessibility. Additionally, I tested the system to identify and address any issues, ensuring its functionality and reliability. By fulfilling these multifaceted roles independently, I not only gained valuable experience across different aspects of project development but also ensured the project's holistic success within the constraints of an individual project.
The scope of this project encompasses the development of an online platform to streamline GP appointment booking and enhance patient access to healthcare services in Northern Ireland. Key features include appointment scheduling, access to health records, and prescription management. However, due to constraints such as time limitations and resource availability inherent in an individual project, certain functionalities may be limited. Despite these constraints, the project aims to deliver a user-friendly and functional solution that addresses critical pain points within the healthcare system while prioritising efficiency, accessibility, and user satisfaction.
Following comprehensive research, including an in-depth exploration of accessibility guidelines and mood-boarding for design inspiration, I transitioned to the ideation phase by sketching various layout and flow concepts for the website. These sketches served as a visual blueprint, allowing me to experiment with different arrangements of interface elements and navigation pathways to ensure an intuitive and inclusive user experience. By combining insights from research with creative ideation, I laid the groundwork for developing a website layout that effectively addresses user needs and aligns with accessibility standards.
